PSVES GOES TO THE 7TH AORTIC ASIA


Singapore City, Singapore – Last April 6 -7, 2018, the Seventh Aortic Asia was held in One Farrer Hotel in Singapore.  Hosted by the newly formed Society for Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons of Singapore and Academy of Medicine Singapore – Chapter of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the meeting became a venue for Asian specialists treating the Asian subset of patients with aortic disease.  Entitled “Collaborating for the Future in Aortic Intervention”, a small delegation of PSVES members attended the said forum.  It was well – attended by different interventionists like interventional cardiologists, radiologists and vascular and endovascular surgeons all over Asia.

It was structured like regular plenary lectures where speakers shared their data and experiences and strategies in treating aortic dissections, complex aortic aneurysms, mycotic aneurysms, complications of interventions.  It emphasized how a multidisciplinary team can make management of complicated aortic disease simple, if they work closely, with one another and with a common goal of improving the quality of patients’ lives

Many remarkable lectures were presented during the summit.   Prominent figures in Vascular community like Dr. Frank Criado of the Medstar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Peter Robless and Dr. Andrew Choong of Singapore opened the first lecture by being reactors in the five (5) different aortic cases presented.  Dr. Bijan Modarai of St. Thomas’ Hospital in London, England talked about radiation safety practices for modern vascular interventionalist.  Dr. Eric Verhoeven of Klinikum Nürnberg, Nürnberg, Germany spoke how volume of aneurysms seen by a hospital or doctor affect the outcomes of aneurysm surgery.  Dr. Takuya Fujikawa of the Chinese University of Hongkong presented the outcomes of total arch replacement in 1,238 cases when he was still the head of Kawasaki Saiwai Hospital in Kawasaki, Japan.  He spoke extensively and expertly about open surgery technique in chronic Type B aortic dissection.  
The chairman of the two – day event was Dr. Victor Chao of the National Heart Centre Singapore.
 
The 8th Aortic Asia is set to take place in Malaysia, date to be announced.
