BASIC PRINCIPLES IN CENTRAL VENOUS CATHETER ACCESS FOR HEMODIALYSIS: LECTURE AND WORKSHOP

Lucena City, Quezon -  Committed to improve the quality and value of vascular services delivery to patients and the public, the PSVES embarked on a lecture - workshop on dialysis vascular access last March 17, 2018.  Members of the PVSES went to the Quezon Memorial Medical Hospital, Lucena City, Quezon Province.  

The activity was well—received by an audience composed of general surgeons, nephrologists, trainees, operating room nurses and dialysis nurses.  Dr. Roland A. Tiopanco, the Chairman of the Department of Surgery opened the lecture - workshop.  Lecture on KDOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines for Vascular Access was delivered by Dr. Melody Atienza, one of the recent Nephrology graduates of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute.  Dr. Jonathan John Tamin from Zamboanga City Medical Center delivered a very informative lecture on the ins and outs of vascular access and arterio—venous mapping for access planning.

A very straight—forward and relevant lecture about choosing the appropriate site for temporary and permanent central venous access for dialysis was given by Dr. Rainan G. Gloira of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute.  Dr. Ricardo DT Quintos II educated the audience regarding tips and tricks on ultrasound—guided catheter insertion techniques.  Dr. Kristina Marie T. Zapanta, on the other hand, enlightened the participants on vascular dialysis access assessment, care and monitoring.  Lastly, Dr. Servando Sergio Simangan delivered a very relevant lecture on vascular access catheter complications, its diagnosis and treatment.

The workshop was facilitated by the speakers themselves where the participants went around different stations where instructions and hands—on activities on central venous catheter insertions, vein mapping with the aid of ultrasound were given.
