DIAGNOSTIC AND POINT –OF-CARE ULTRASOUND FOR VASCULAR SURGEON: LEARN HOW TO PERFORM AND INTERPRET VASCULAR ULTRASOUND

Quezon City - The Society believed in empowering its members.  True to its mandate “to promote, foster and develop better knowledge of scientific principles and art of vascular surgery and endovascular surgery”, it collaborated with the Philippine Society for Ultrasound in Surgery, Inc (PSUS) and effected a one – day hands-on workshop at the Doctors Lounge of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute last September 22, 2018.  It was attended by trainees and consultants alike from different institutions namely National Kidney and Transplant Institute, The Medical City, University of Santo Tomas Hospital.

Dr. Quintos on Physics of Ultrasound
Ultrasonography for the vascular system has long been recognized as one of the most important diagnostic modalities in treatment of vascular disease.  The craft was initially delegated to radiologists and internists practicing vascular medicine.  Over time, vascular surgeons proactively embraced its benefits and decided to master the craft.  As ultrasonography of the vascular tree provides valuable information that helps vascular surgeon arrive at a sound diagnosis, it started playing an important role in the execution of many ultrasound – guided vascular intervention.  The time has arrived when the vascular surgeons are the ones holding the ultrasound probe.

Team NKTI with Dr. Gali as their preceptor
The morning session was allotted for lectures about the basic of ultrasound and physics involved in its execution, delivered by Engineer Dave Santiago and Dr. Ricardo Jose T. Quintos II.  Sessions on interpreting arterial and venous duplex studies of the upper and lower extremities and carotid artery followed were delivered by Dr. Joy M. Gali, Dr. Charlton Sibal and Dr. Ferdinand Cruz Jr, respectively.

The afternoon session was allotted for the hands – on workshop.  In live models, the participants were able to apply their learnings from the morning session.  A PSUS – accredited vascular sonologist who are practicing vascular and endovascular surgeons themselves was assigned to each group of participants to guide them all throughout the workshop.

The fruitful workshop will not be the last.  Plans for holding workshops for ultrasound of aorta, renal arteries, visceral arteries are in its planning stages.

The activity became successful through the help of our industry partners: Siemens Healthcare Phils Inc., RG Meditron Inc., Pinnacle Supplies and Service Unlimited Inc, Sonosite Fujifilm, Nordep Phil and Jeremiah Drugs.
