BASIC PRINCIPLES IN CENTRAL VENOUS CATHETER ACCESS FOR HEMODIALYSIS: PRE-CONVENTION WORKSHOP

Mandaluyong City - One of the many advocacies of the Society was to work and collaborate with our colleagues in the discipline, surgical and non – surgical specialties alike, to improve the outcomes of the patients we manage.  Last April 24, 2018, PSVES headed a pre – convention workshop in the 38th Annual Convention of the Philippine Society of Nephrology and International Society of Nephrology at the Isla Ballroom of EDSA Shangri -La Hotel in Mandaluyong City.

Different Workshop Stations during the Convention
The Society prepared three (3) stations where vascular surgeons were tasked to teach “rotating” nephrologists skills that were important in ESRD patients in hemodialysis.  The first station introduced the basic of ultrasound and its role in vascular tree mapping for vascular access. It was headed by Dr. Joy M. Gali and Dr. Steve O. Chan.  The second station introduced the concept of ultrasound – guided needling of the hemodialysis access.  Delegates were guided on how to do proper cannulation of vessels under ultrasound guidance.  The said stations were headed by Dr. Juan Alejandro C. Sotto and Dr. Jonathan L. Lumicday II.  The last station was headed by Dr. Arlene C. Duque, Dr. Kristina Marie T. Zapanta and Dr. Rainan G. Gloria.  It introduced the concept of proper ultrasound – guided femoral catheter insertion.

Dr. Tiangco, Dr. Quintos, Dr. Manlutac
In the same venue, Dr. Ricardo Jose T. Quintos II delivered a very enlightening lecture entitled “Managing Hemodialysis Access Problems.” He explained the interventions for inflow – outflow problems of the vascular access and explaining when and where to utilize the open and endovascular techniques in addressing the access problem.

The pre – convention workshop was powered by Medtronic Philippines.
